MBABANE – He is 83 years old and he is still going strong.

That is the story of South Africa Durban’s Umhlanga Parkrun organiser, Etienne Hibbert, who completed his 163 parkruns in the 29th edition of the Mbabane Parkrun.
Hibbert joined 92 runners in the weekly five-kilometre race held at Mbabane Club yesterday.

This was his first international parkrun. He has participated in other 25 different parkruns in South Africa which totals to 163 races in all. He has done a The Umhlanga Parkrun, Newcastle Parkrun, North Beach and East London Parkrun, just to mention a few. Once a parkrun completes over 100 races, he is referred as a parkrun tourist.

Speaking after the race, Hibbert said what motivated him was to keep relatively fit. “I also like the good company the parkrun offers. You get to meet new people and make new friends, while at the same time keeping healthy and fit. I would encourage people to join these weekly runs,” Hibbert said. Meanwhile, parkrun record holder and Umbutfo Swaziland Defence Force (USDF) athlete Nkululeko Gama completed his 15 runs in style as he emerged as the winner, clocking at 15:27 minutes. Interestingly, he has won all the 15 races he has participated in. He is one of the avid parkrun participants who says his motivation is to beat his personal best of 15:17 minutes.
“I am happy that the parkrun has helped me to stay fit as an athlete. It also helps me to improve my time as a marathon runner,” Gama said.
