10 MONTHS, E6.6M FOR ‘BIRDS’

MBABANE – They are the richest team in the land without a doubt – in just six months they have made a staggering E6.6 million.

That is none other than high-flying Mbabane Swallows who are yet to be beaten in the MTN League after 34 games since last season. Since February when they won the Ingwenyama Cup, they have raked in the aforementioned amount in prizes as they also lifted last season’s MTN League title, this year’s SwaziTelecom Charity Cup, CAF group stage prize and now the league’s first round incentive.

All these titles brought together amount to E6.6 million. The Ingwenyama Cup left them E1.2 million richer, E750 000 for the league championship, E950 000 for Charity Cup, E3.4 million from CAF for reaching group stage and E350 000 for current season’s league first round success.

The figures also show that the country’s football is now better in terms of prizes compared to most African nations and if one team wins everything, it certainly can run itself financially as envisaged is the case with the red and white giants.
The figure above is only prize money, exclusive of the gate collections which have been impressive since the season started especially because they have co-hosted with city rivals Mbabane Highlanders in most of their home games.

Their chairman Victor ‘Maradona’ Gamedze said it once that Swazi football ‘was improving in terms of sponsorships and prize monies’, something he said could one day see players as full time employees as opposed to going to work elsewhere then hitting training after hours.

Also, the dividends at Swallows are conspicuously shared with the players who are currently the highest paid in the elite league and over half the team own cars now. Their General Manager Sandile ‘Beyond 2000’ Zwane when sought for comment could not be reached. His cellphones (both numbers) were off the network for the better part of the day.
