MAGUGA – The country has managed to produce several podium finishers in Swaziland’s toughest and biggest pairs stage race.

The curtain fell on the Inyatsi Swazi Frontier three-stage pairs race with the crowning of visiting South Africa’s Linus Van Onselen and his son, Leonardo, as champions at Maguga Lodge outside Pigg’s Peak on Saturday.

On top of a silver medal, courtesy of the courageous pair of William Kelly and Che Lue, the country had several cyclists featuring in the top three in the various categories.

While the impressive Nadine Stein and Retha Harding defied odds to win in the ladies category with a remarkable time of 12:44:13 hours, Richard Cunningham and Wendy Reed left a mark by ranking third in the mixed pairs division.

Kelly, 51, and Lue, 43, were further named runners-up in the ‘Mkhulus’ category, which was a class of cyclists with an average team age of minimum 45.
Meanwhile, the ‘special’ Buffaloes’ category went to a team styled Home James.
It was made up of the duo of Neil Salter and Adam Wood, who clocked a total time 12:26:58 hours in the three days. To qualify, a team needed to have a total weight of not less than 180kg.

Competitors were from across the region and others travelled from as far as United Kingdom and the United States of America.
The race started at Hawane Resort outside Mbabane on Thursday.

The first stop was at Bulembu Country Lodge before the cyclists raced to Pigg’s Peak Hotel the next day.
