LOBAMBA – As it continues to grow in leaps and bounds in participation and international relations, the Imbube Marathon prize monies will shoot up next year.

His Majesty King Mswati III yesterday announced that next year’s champion of the Imbube Marathon will receive in excess of E100 000.
Sifiso Sibandze successfully defended his Imbube crown yesterday to win the 42.2km and first Swazi prizes just like the previous year, pocketing E50 000 in total. Sibandze who was with Correctional Athletics Club in the past 11 months, appeared for USDF Club in the event.

The king when addressing the close to 4 000 athletes who had converged at the Somhlolo National Stadium for the second edition of the mega sponsored Imbube Marathon backed by the Swaziland National Provident Fund (SNPF) said the event was now for the entire Southern African Development Community (SADC) judging by the number of athletes who participated. “Next year’s winner will get in excess of E100 000 as the event continues to grow. It is not every day that one gets to make E100 000 in a few hours and I challenge Swazis to take to the road in readiness for next year’s event,” the king roared to much loud applause from those in attendance.

His Majesty highlighted that the kingdom was working hard to have citizens that were healthy for social and economic development. He congratulated all winners while encouraging those who did not make it to work hard for next year’s edition. The Imbube Marathon was the second sporting event the king had attended in just two days after his involvement in the 14th edition of the King’s Golf Cup.
