LOBAMBA – The Imbube marathon has not only grown in numbers but it has attracted international media.

This was confirmed by SNPF Senior Marketing Communications Officer Mlungisi Dlamini, during an interview with the local media yesterday at Somhlolo National Stadium.
This was during the Somhlolo National Stadium inspection which was attended by the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs David ‘Cruiser’ Ngcamphalala, Swaziland national Provident Fund CEO Prince Lonkhokhela, Royal Swaziland Police Traffic stuff members and Swaziland Emergency Services. “The Southern African Broadcasting Corporation known as SABC Sports, will be here for the Imbube marathon. We are very happy that the race being the second edition has attracted not only international media houses but it has attracted international top athletes mainly from South Africa,” Dlamini said.

He further revealed that there were over 150 international athletes who have registered for the arguably biggest race in the land. “We have quite a number of international top athletes who have confirmed their participation in the show. We also have some clubs from South Africa who have registered, and these are Team Nelspruit and the Southern African Police athletics club and a host of other teams,” he said. The senior marketing officer said they were happy to have exceeded their 3 000 target. “We are happy to announce that we have 3 100 athletes who have registered and you will recall that last year we had only 2 049 participants. This shows that the race has grown and we are happy about the improved numbers,” he disclosed. He said the main race (42.2km) attracted 348 runners while the half marathon (21.1km) saw 998 runners registering, with only 58 for the 3.3km race. The 10km race was the most popular one with athletes’ enthusiasts, as 1 749 will take part in this category.

The main race will start at 5:30am while the 21.1km will follow at 6am, with the 10km following suite at 6am and the 3.3km starting at 7am.
