MBABANE – Sitsebe brushed aside a listless Mauritius by 3-0 to have a dream start at the COSAFA Women’s Championship in Zimbabwe.

Goals from outstanding player, Celiwe ‘Cece’ Nkambule, Nobuhle Mdluli and Nkola Sanga steered Mduduzi ‘Sikhalo’ Nxumalo’s charges to the top of Group B in the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) match played at Luveve Stadium in Bulawayo yesterday.

After several years in the ‘wilderness’, the national women soccer outfit were back in the spotlight yesterday.  They had never gone past the first hurdle in the tournament and a 3-0 win over Botswana back in 2002 was their only notable achievement in the regional showpiece.

In yesterday’s showdown against the opponents, who played their first competitive match in 2012, Sitsebe had set the tone for a perfect outing by scoring in the opening minute. They took a two-goal cushion to the break. The last nail was hit in the coffin four minutes from time.

Team skipper, Sibongile Ngwenya, was happy for the good start as she felt the win never came on a silver platter.
“The concentration levels were high.
“The game has lightened us up,” said the Young Buffaloes Ladies defender.

To remain in pursuit of a historic qualification to the knockout stages of the competition, the national women soccer side have to pray for another good outing against Mozambique and guest nation, Kenya, tomorrow and on Monday, respectively. Kenya beat Mozambique by 5-2 to be joint top with Swaziland.
