MBABANE – Team Swaziland’s hopes of a podium finish were dashed following back-to-back defeats to Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The national netball outfit was away in Namibia for an invitational tournament, which got underway on Wednesday. After beating Botswana by 39-32 on Thursday, the side lost 61-42 and 49-30 to Zambia and Zimbabwe, respectively, in the next two days to miss out on a third place finish. Also featuring in the tournament were the hosts, who beat Swaziland 51-34 on day one. Confirming the results, National Netball Association of Swaziland (NNAS) President, Mandisa Sigudla, said the technical team led by Thobile Nzama-Dlamini lamented the injury of sharp shooter, Jabu Khathwane in the Zambia game.

Resting

“The team played without resting from Wednesday. “All the opponents were fresh from another tough tournament in Uganda,” said Sigudla. Sigudla stressed that it was a learning curve and felt Swaziland needed more such events to improve and gain confidence. The team left Namibia on Saturday by road. They are expected back home before the end of the day.  The next stop is set to be in Singapore for another invitational, but lucrative tournament in December.
