PIGG’S PEAK – He went to the race with one thing in mind, to win or die.

He was not ready to lose to anyone, not even last year’s champion Michael Ndaba. That is the story of Buy Cash Golden Foot 21km race new champion Melusi Sihlongonyane of USDF as he conjured up all the strength left in his veins in the final kilometre of the race to beat a strong challenge from Correctional Service runner Nkululeko Gama who had led from the start.

Sihlongonyane finished second last year in the first edition of the E200 000 sponsored race. The race started and ended at Killarney Sports Ground in the northern Hhohho town.

Gama finished at 1:14:35 hours while another Umbutfo Swaziland Defence Force (USDF) athlete Amos Thwala completed the podium finish on third with 1:15:20 hours.
Sihlongonyane said the race was tough but his coach’s words ahead of the race motivated him to work harder to win the title.

“My coach said it is better to die than being a failure and I was determined to prove him right. I did well and the competition is part of the preparations for the coming FSRA and the Imbumbe Marathon races,” he said.
Gracing the occasion was Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs David ‘Cruiser’ Ngcamphalala, Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Khulani Mamba, Athletics Association of Swaziland (AAS) President Gideon Mthembu, Buy Cash Principal Operations Manager Senzo Nhlabatsi and Golden Foot Athletics Club President Tokky Hou.
