MBABANE – With skateboarding, you either win or learn. Over 10 children put aside their books and got down to business yesterday as they were taken through skateboarding lessons by coaches Jason Martin, Sentelwe Dlamini and Boniswa Tsela in a five-day skate camp which started yesterday.

Skateboarding will be represented at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan for the first time. Jason Martins said being a coach; he had taken the initiative to introduce the sport to young stars, as there are many of them who are interested.

He said now that the sport was an Olympic sport; it has to be introduced the right way and also move away from the streets but be played in a good and safe environment.
Jason said he was expecting a friend from South Africa’s Brian Hartell, who is also a coach to come and assist him during the lessons. He said they will be showcasing about the sport during the Trade Fair.
“We are not only giving skateboarding skills here but also life skills. With skateboard, you either win or learn, and there are no failures and those are life skills. This sport needs one to have passion for it and also be ready for the challenges like falling,” he said.

The event is sponsored by Mitchell’s Restaurant. The camp is held in Pine Valley.
Martins said this was phase one and stage two of the camp, which is open to those who will miss the first one. It will be staged at the same venue between August 21 and August 25 from 11:30am.
Would-be participants can liaise with Martin on 7617 8755. He said more people are still welcome to join in the camp. Camp fee is E650.
