MANZINI – Fears of a rift between the National Referees Association of Swaziland (NRAS) and the country’s football mother body have been ‘warded off.’

Before the stop at Caritas in Manzini yesterday for the elective NRAS General Assembly, a senior refereeing official was reported to the executive committee for insinuating to a junior referee to be wary of voting for the incumbent leadership because they were against the National Football Association of Swaziland (NFAS).
In his address during yesterday’s annual general meeting, re-elected NRAS Chairman, Sipho Kunene, categorically stated that there was no rivalry between his office and the NFAS.
“We are aware football has its politics, which makes us look like enemies to some.

“Differences in opinions do not mean we’re enemies,” said Kunene.
The matter was discussed at length during the gathering and newly-elected Secretary Simanga Nhleko had even suggested that the culprit be petitioned to withdraw the statement.
Match Commissioner Enock Nkambule also revealed during the meeting that some people had called him in an attempt to influence who to vote for yesterday.
Meanwhile, the referees had nominated Mashumi Shongwe to become the next NFAS president. The move partly led to the spread of the rumours that the two bodies were not seeing eye to eye. In his speech, Kunene said his office was fully behind Mthethwa.

“On behalf of the NRAS, we congratulate Mr Adam ‘Bomber’ Mthethwa for being elected to lead the NFAS for the next four years.
“We’re happy that the issues in the table for him to address will now be attended to without delay. We trust and believe that his re-election is not good for us only, but even for the country’s football,” said Kunene.
NFAS CEO Frederick Mngomezulu was an observer during the meeting and in his brief address, he did not entertain the rift rumours. He just highlighted that intelligence was the ability to deal with dissenting views.
