LOBAMBA – Two quick first half goals steered Vovovo to the Premier League ahead of hapless Manzini Sea Birds in a pulsating decider yesterday.
Mcolisi Tsabedze and former Mbabane Highlanders forward, Sibusiso Thwala, were on target 14 minutes apart to ensure the Southern Hhohho outfit won promotion with a 2-1 win for the first time in their history at Somhlolo National Stadium. They survived the nerve-wrecking and tightly-contested play-offs decider to finish three points clear ahead of Gcina Dlamini’s charges, who got another shot at redemption following a disastrous campaign in the elite league.
Just a year ago, Vovovo, who needed a draw yesterday, were playing in the country’s football third-tier, but would now dine with the big boys as they were the last team standing in the three-team play-offs involving Madlenya.
They finished on nine points in four matches.
Both sides were tied on six points before the tension-filled decider but the former Hhohho Super League champions enjoyed a better head-to-head. Yesterday’s result saw Vovovo, who welcomed talisman Banele Mkhabela, completing a double as they also won 1-2 in the reverse fxiture. Mkhabela is currently undergoing training to be a soldier at Mbuluzi. He missed the other three matches.
