MATSAPHA – After one and a half hour battle for the top spot, Mukelwa Maziya outwitted Sakhile Hlophe to win the Swaziland Building Society (SBS) Under12- finals.


The 11-year old needed three sets to break the resistance of Hlophe. Having won the first set, Hlophe came back strong to win the second set 6-4. Maziya then came back strong in the third set to defeat him 10-8.
The two reached the finals having won in the semi-finals. Sakhile won 6-0, 6-2 against Gcinizwe Khumalo while Mukelwa beat Themba Tivane 6-0, 6-0 to reach the finals.


In the boy’s Under-16, Thando Bhembe was the winner after defeating Owenkhosi Khumalo 6-1, 6-2 in the finals. Bhembe won 6-4, 7-5 against Vusi Tsabedze in the semi-finals, while Owenkhosi Khumalo defeated Lindokuhle Magutjwa 6-1, 6-1 to reach the finals.
In the ladies section, Luching Sorokhaibam was the player to watch as she won the Under-12 girls in the round robin and also reached the finals of the Under-16 girls only to be defeated by Tandzile Dlamini 6-4, 6-4 to finish runner-up.


The tournament where over 50 players took part started on Saturday, with the semi-finals and finals played yesterday. The tournament Director Bruce Gama congratulated the winners. He said the competition was tough among the players and the winner showed great improvement in their games.


“This was our first junior’s tournament under the new calendar, after the E100 000 sponsorship launch by Swaziland Building Society. A lot of tournament are on the pipeline and we urge coaches to continue to work hard with the juniors at training,” he said.
