MBABANE – As competitive mountain biking gets momentum in the country, cyclists are about to get a whole new range of exciting opportunities in the fast-growing field of leisure MTB touring.

Lubombo MTB Tours, established by Genene Fineberg and Peter Hughes, has launched the first route of a number of MTB leisure experiences, with a number of routes planned for the country and the Mpumalanga Lowveld.
Typical trails take three or four days to complete, with distances of about 50km per day. Routes have been selected for their scenic appeal and history (in which Swaziland and the Mpumalanga Lowveld abounds) with the emphasis on relaxed easy riding, with the occasional climb or technical challenge to keep everyone on their toes.
The inaugural ride of the first route took place recently.

The trail traverses approximately 200km of gently undulating terrain, and crosses the Peace Parks Foundation supported Lubombo Conservancy from north to south, starting at the village of Tshaneni and ending four days later in the historic town of Siteki on top of the Lebombo.
The trail crosses the Komati and Mbuluzi River Valleys, including a ride through a vast commercial cattle and game ranch, a working sugar cane farm and the Mbuluzi and Mlawula Game Reserves. It then climbs up to the top of the Lubombo Plateau, with its views over the Lowveld and Mozambique coastal plains.

Cyclists are then returned to the start for their journey home.
Overnight accommodation in charming local lodges and all meals and snacks are provided. Guides from the local area accompany the cycling groups each day, and provide an ongoing commentary of the history of the area, unique features and wildlife of each of the routes.
Each evening, local entertainment is provided, giving visiting cyclists the opportunity to meet local personalities and learn more about the fascinating places included in the tours.
The next route planned will cover the Barberton Valley, with its rich history taking in the likes of Jock of the Bushveld, the fantastic and unique Geotrail, some of the oldest gold mines in the country, the first stock-exchange in South Africa, and the charm of the Kaapsehoop village perched on the edge of the escarpment. Trails will run in the cooler months from April to September.
