MBABANE – Olympic gold medal winning swimmer Penny Heyns of South Africa will grace our shores to conduct clinics at Ubombo Primary School.

The 14 times World Champion achieved iconic status when in both the 100m and 200m breaststroke, she won gold medals during the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. She became the only woman to achieve this feat. She will be in the country from September 4 t the 8th. She is invited to the country by Ubombo Primary School (UPS) to host a four day swimming clinic for 50 young swimmers, between the ages of 8 and 16 in Big Bend. Principal of UPS Lesley Visser said UPS, along with Penny Heyns will fully sponsor two young community swimmers, who have shown tremendous potential and strength in the pool at national galas.

Penny Heyns established herself as the world’s greatest female breaststroker of the 20th Century by becoming the only woman in Olympic history to win both the 100m and 200m breaststroke events in Atlanta 1996, bronze in Sydney 2000 and by breaking a total of 14 individual world records during her career
She is South Africa’s only double Olympic Individual gold medalist. She is the only swimmer in history to hold five of the possible six breaststroke world records at the same time.

“In January, Ubombo Primary heeded the call of the government to communities to make sure that we left no stone unturned in our efforts to ensure that all children in Swaziland are water safe, thus preventing unnecessary deaths due to drowning. At UPS we are proud that each and every one of our learners can swim,” she said.
“The Penny Heyns swimming clinic fee will include accommodation for three nights, all meals, as well as transport to and from the pool daily. All participants will be supervised 24/7 by the staff of UPS and children will enjoy time in and out of the pool with Penny Heyns, doing both stroke correction and training in all four strokes.   Applicants should be able to swim at least two stokes and will be divided into groups according to their abilities,” she said.

Visser said the swimming clinic will finish off with a wonderful gala and the opportunity to have a photo taken with Penny’s Olympic medals. She urged coaches to email the names of those who wanted to work with Penny during this time and benefit from her vast knowledge and experience.
Some of the activities to be enjoyed by those in attendance will be bonfires, braais and lots of evening fun.
