KWALUSENI – After taxing matches all weekend, Jozi Nuggets emerged as champions of the 2017 Swaziland Invitational International Basketball Tournament.
Nuggets beat Harare Hornets 65-53 to return to their native South Africa with gold.

The country hosted about 40 teams from across the region in the 2017 edition of the annual SIIBT.
Swaziland National Basketball Association (SNBA) President Nhlanhla Maphanga, who was a keen spectator at the games along with his executive, lauded the importance of such international matches which helped local sides gauge their progress in the sport.

Five teams represented the country: Steels, Superstars, Imbumbe, Jazz and Super Ladies, with the latter the only side to reach the knockout stages but unfortunately crashing out in an 81-20 bashing at the hands of eventual finalists Costa do Sol.

“It is important to play different teams from other countries and we have realised our teams need to finish strong and be deadly in the final third. Our teams dominated most of their games but were not clinical, tending to choke in the final third. These countries run strong development programmes which as an association we will be emulating to reach their level,” Maphanga said.
