MBABANE – Of seven Mbabane Parkrun 5km races athlete Sifiso Ngcobo had been so dominant he won it four times to grab every headline week in and week out.

Just last week, when he won his fourth in the fastest time ever in the race, he had promised to clock a minute less than his 16:33 minutes and record a fifth win. However, little did he know that some athletes were reading and watching the space in this newspaper.

His promise to win it again yesterday failed completely as he finally got his match in Brian Gama, whose determination and zeal to turn the tables and grab the attention from Ngcobo was a mission well accomplished.

Gama had been wondering why Ngcobo was always the winner whenever he opened The Times Sunday sports pages.
“I read it in the Times Sunday that Sifiso Ngcobo was dominating in the Mbabane Parkrun so I decided that I should challenge him,” he said after clocking a time of 16:18 minutes.

His competitor and runner-up this time around managed to better his 16:33 minutes from his last race as he clocked 16:23 minutes at the Mbabane Club.
Speaking after the race, Gama said he had come to give Ngcobo a challenge.
“I knew that he was going to be tough so I took it upon myself to beat him to his time. He is a good runner but I was determined to finish ahead of him. Well, the race was exciting and has clear markings and one cannot lose track. I am hoping next week I will partake to defend my record,” said Gama.

His rival, Ngcobo, was adamant he would retain his place next Saturday.
