MBABANE – New Sihlangu coach Pieter de Jongh did his homework well, anticipating Niger’s scorching temperatures ahead of his first official assignment.

Sihlangu arrived safely in Niger just after noon yesterday in Niamey after a tiring trip from Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport via Ethiopia to this West African nation.

De Jongh had earlier on, in the preparations for this 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, took his troops to a week-long camp in Big Bend, a place that records the highest temperatures in Swaziland.

Sihlangu are in Group J alongside Niger and other African football powerhouses Tunisia and Egypt. According to weather forecasts obtained online from Niamey, the Capital and largest city of Niger and host of this match, tomorrow will record up to 39 degrees Celsius.
Football Association (FA) Marketing and Communications Officer Muzi Radebe confirmed correspondence from the squad head of delegation Johannes ‘Ace’ Siboza that they had a safe trip.

“I’m still communicating with them but they have confirmed arrival in Niamey,” Radebe said.
Niamey lies on the Niger River, primarily situated on the east bank. It is an administrative, cultural and economic centre of the western nation. Niamey’s population was counted as 978 029 as of the 2012 census final adjustment, and alone almost equals the country’s about 1.1million population. However, its administrative area the Niamey Capital District, covering 670 km2, had 1 026 848 people in the 2012 census final adjustment. As of 2017, recent population projections show the capital district growing at a rate less than the country as a whole, which has the world’s highest fertility rate.
