TUNIS – A new broom sweeps cleaner. This is the case in the football corridors of power at the Confederation of African Football (CAF) headquarters in Cairo, Egypt after new president Ahmad Ahmad of Madagascar took over from Issa Hayatou after 29 years of misrule, as, for the first time ever, teams have been given half of the guaranteed prize monies for reaching either the Total CAF Champions League and Total CAF Confederations Cup Group stages.

Teams in the Confederation Cup, where Swaziland is represented by the courageous Mbabane Swallows, are guaranteed a sum of E3.6 million.
In a symposium held in Egypt during the draw for the group stages last month, Swallows were represented by long serving official, General Manager Sandile ‘Beyond 2000’ Zwane where CAF announced the good news that the teams will be given half of the guaranteed E3.6 million prize money for reaching the continental tournament’s group stages.

An informed source told the Times Sports Desk that all the teams have received their prize monies but Swallows’ payment has been delayed by documentation processes handled by the National Football Association of Swaziland (NFAS), who communicate directly with the African football governing body.

“Swallows would have received the money like all other teams before the opening rounds of the group stages but some documentation processes with the Football Association where not in place last week. They will be getting the money anytime from now,” our source said.

National Football Association of Swaziland (NFAS) Media officer Muzi Radebe said the issue is being handled by Swallows and CAF.
“I am not in a position to say how much they will be getting as the issue is discussed by the team and CAF and ours is to facilitate whenever we are called upon to do so. Swallows will be the better people to comment,” Radebe said when interviewed last Monday.

Swallows General Manager, Sandile ‘Beyond 2000’ Zwane, who represented Swallows in the CAF meeting in Cairo, Egypt last month, confirmed they will receiving half of the prize money from CAF.
“Yes, it was announced during the meeting that CAF will not only be providing equipment but will also give us half of the guaranteed prize money. It’s a process we are working on,” Zwane said.
