DO AWAY WITH PATRONS, ELDERS

MBABANE – In a bid to save their business and the country’s football, the PLS Executive Committee feels the existence of Patrons and Elders in the local game is the main reason for Mbabane Highlanders’ relegation woes and Manzini Wanderers’ unconvincing

performance.
Having identified this problem, which has also contributed to their proposed 14-team league, meaning there cannot be relegation this season but promotion only from the First Division League, the PLS Executive through Chairman Victor ‘Maradona’ Gamedze, has taken a decision to completely abolish these structures.

“We have got to clarify the 14-team league issue that is now making headlines even though we had thought we’d do so once the time was right but clearly it’s now out there and before it all goes wrong, we need to clarify it. It’s an issue we discussed with the full Board of Governors last Friday as we were concerned about the way these big clubs were run.

“We had already identified that these two big teams had a problem, a cancer, and that is the Patrons and Elders as part of their structures. They are our members and we love them in good and bad times. So, as of today, it has to be known that not one team will ever again have a Patron or Elder; instead, we’re now turning to CAF’s Club Licensing because there has been a lot of compromise and it’s killing our football business,” Gamedze said during a lengthy press conference at Sigwaca House yesterday.

He said first of all, FIFA and CAF did not recognise Patrons and Elders but have guidelines of what a proper football club management structure should be like. He said they did not even know what criterion was used to pick Patrons or Elders.
