MBABANE – Unstoppable junior cyclist Muzi Shabangu ‘painted’ Mozambique gold yesterday.

The MTN Khemani Cycling Club star was among local cyclists in the 110km road race staged under the Desafio Dois Picos banner in Namaacha, Mozambique.

The 19-year-old, who is the country’s ‘king of the road’ clocked  03:10:23 hours to outshine  the host country’s national champion Miguel Duarte, who ranked an unusual third in 03:16:57 hours. The latter’s name has become synonymous with gold in the Dups Mafutseni Classic and Siteki race.

Also on the podium was MTN Khemani new signee Mduduzi Zwane, who ranked an impressive second in 03:15:01 hours.
The festivities were coupled with a 45km mountain bike event. Off-road races ace Sifiso Mhlanga finished second in 01:37:43 hours.  He followed South Africa’s seasoned Cape Epic rider Shan Wilson, who reached the winning point after 01:30:01 hours.   Seasoned local cyclist William Kelly also defied odds to rank third in 01:39:03 hours.

Confirming the results, Cycling Association of Swaziland (CAS) President Sihlangu Nhlabatsi, who was part of the delegation, noted an improved showing among the country’s competitors.

“Swazis made us proud in Mozambique. It shows the sport is growing in leaps and bounds.
“This ended the dominance of Mozambique over Swaziland as Muzi was four minutes ahead of Miguel, who came 36 seconds after Mduduzi,” said Nhlabatsi.

Local cyclists are now featuring regularly in regional races in Mozambique, South Africa and Botswana, among other countries.
