MANZINI – Just like last year, he travelled, arrived and conquered.

That is the story of Mozambique-born top runner Alberto Mamba, who successfully defended the 1 500m crown he won last year at the very same Athletics Association of Swaziland (AAS) Track and Field National Championships. AAS hosted the two-day spectacular event at the Mavuso Sports Centre.

Alberto, needless to say, runs as if he eats air, showed a powered finish-up to cross the line ahead of Umbutfo Swaziland Defence Force (USDF) Athletics Club’s Veli Dlamini, clocking 3:50:6 minutes. Veli had given the about 500 people inside the stadium hope that the gold medal will remain in the country when he led the three round event for prolonged periods only to be let down by his finishing to clock an impressive 3:51:5 minutes.
Veli is fresh from representing the country at the World Cross Country Championships in Uganda.

“I must admit that Veli is a good athlete himself but was let down by his finishing, which is my strength. I worked well with my coach and was confident of winning this one,” Alberto said after winning the highly charged event.
Veli, on the other hand, admitted Alberto is good after seeing him in previous events.
“I was confident of beating him this time around but he is good on the last lap,” the USDF athlete said.
