MANZINI – Senior karate star Mpendulo Gondo suffered a humiliating defeat yesterday when he lost to a blue belt.

This was during the Oyama Kyokushinkaikan Karate National Tournament at the Bosco Skills Centre.
Gondo, who holds a 3rd Dan Black belt, was stunned by young and lower ranking fighter Sibusiso Nkambule, who is only a blue belt.
The duo squared up in the under 60kg division.

Before taking to the Tatami (fighting arena), Gondo had been favoured to progress as he is renowned for his aggressive kicks and punches.
However, karate is not about the ranks all the time but talent, determination, training and the will to stand pain.
Nkambule took that but not without a fight as he outsmarted Gondo with his fighting technique.

After this fight, Nkambule was unlucky to lose to yet another black belt Mpendulo Mahlobo, in the semis.
Mahlobo, who is from Zakhele Do- jo (club), was due to meet UNISWA Kwaluseni’s Mandzisa Dlamini who is a blue belt, in the final.

He was also favoured to win the division but Dlamini could also challenge him to the title. The tournament was still ongoing at the time this report was compiled.
