D-DAY FOR ATHLETES IN SSSA/SSA CHAMPS

MBABANE – Schools athletes will have to prove their worth if ready to compete for the country in the COSSASA games tomorrow during the national championships.


The E40 000 sponsored national championships are billed for the Mavuso Sports Centre, starting at 9am. The champions are sponsored by the Swaziland Sugar Association. Competing in the track and field events are the pupils who excelled in the regional competitions.


Swaziland Schools Sports Association (SSSA) Public Relations Officer (PRO) Victor ‘Mavikane’ Dlamini said this is the biggest in their athletics calendar as now all the schools from the four regions being Hhohho, Manzini, Shiselweni and Lubombo will be represented by the best athletes.
He said all four regions would cascade to the Mavuso Sports Centre for the competitions.


He said the pupils who will shine in the day and clock the qualifying times for the COSSASA games they will be selected.
The COSSASA games are billed for Harare, Zimbabwe early May.


“The national championships marked the closing of the athletics season and we are happy that up to this far, all has been well. We are encouraging best behaviour from all pupils, teachers and parents who will be attending the competitions,” he said.


Dlamini invited athletics clubs to also attend the event as to scout for talent.
He said they had involved the Athletics Association of Swaziland (AAS) in hosting the event as they want things to be done professionally.
“We are happy with the support we got from the Swaziland Sugar Association and AAS. The pupils will be competing knowing that they will be incentivised for their efforts. This turns to raise the standard of the competition,” he said.
