MBABANE – The much publicised game between Mbabane Swallows and Matsapha United might be over, but the battle has just begun off the field.

In their weekly column, which is published in our sister publication, The Times of Swaziland, every Friday, the capital city giants dubbed the National First Division side’s celebrated 2-1 win in the SwaziBank Cup last 16 in the past week a fluke, a statement which has left Matsapha hot under the collar.

The English Dictionary for Advanced Learners defines a fluke as something that happens unexpectedly because of an accident or good luck.
“We are not in the same class as our opponents on any other day. Actually, we are just miles apart. We cannot be mentioned on the same breath, seriously. I will say it again without the fear of contradiction that our opponents’ win was a fluke and a result of a combination of factors that worked against us on the day.

“We remain proud. We are Mbabane Swallows and we cannot be mentioned on the same breath as teams that are yet to win anything,” reads Swallows’ statement in their column.
Matsapha United, in a responsive statement issued through acting CEO Victor ‘Mavikane’ Dlamini, were utterly disappointed by the remarks.
“We do not want to be emotional about the comments and create a media debate. As a new team, we were hoping to learn a lot from Swallows. Swallows are one of the oldest teams. They should be exemplary. We need to learn to accept results.

“Such comments do not help football and they can perpetrate violence among soccer fans. We don’t care about what they say about the result, but our fluke win has taken us to the last eight. We don’t want to dwell much on the issue,” read the team’s statement yesterday.
