MBABANE – Muti beliefs reigned supreme during the SwaziBank Cup last 16 double header at Somhlolo National Stadium on Sunday.

Just before kick-off of the first match between Mbabane Highlanders and Manzini Sea Birds, a dead bird was found wrapped in a lihiya just behind the south stands. The fans found the wrapped parcel buried under a rock, however, the dead bird was visible inside the lihiya.
One of the fans who made the discovery said they feared for their lives and as a result they did not touch the mysterious parcel.

“There was a dead bird that was already in a decomposed state. A big stone was placed on top of the lihiya. Before kick-off of the second game between Matsapha United and Mbabane Swallows, the parcel was no longer there,” said the fan who commented on condition on anonymity in fear of victimisation.

Ahead of the Mbabane Highlanders, Manzini Sea Birds kick-off, one of the marshals was screaming sabotage after he discovered human waste just behind the goal post next to the north stand.
“It was fresh and you could tell that it is something that happened at night or in the morning. We had to remove it (human waste) it as we were preparing for the player’s warm-up,” he said.

After the Premier League of Swaziland (PLS) tightened the screws by introducing stringent laws concerning the use of muti, the discovery of the muti substances in local stadiums subsided. The Somhlolo National Stadium’s artificial turf was damaged years ago as it was ripped open and some foreign substances – including slaughtered chickens - were tucked inside. The damage was done at the centre circle and at the penalty spots.
