MBABANE – It was initially planned their best five players against Botswana’s Orapa United in the CAF Confederations Cup would get E10 000 but instead, each of the players yesterday received E4 000 cash each.

This was for their exploits on the preliminary round of the continental club tournament, winning 1-0 away and finishing the job with a come-from-behind 3-2 win at Somhlolo National Stadium a fortnight ago.
“After considering a lot of things, it was decided that not only the best five players on the day were recognised because in the end it was a team effort. Every player was out there to fight so we ended up giving all of them E4 000 each,” said a source in the club.
The source said the club’s directors felt the team spirit should not be broken because one way or the other it would come out who received the cash.

“It’s best they all get an equal amount. Around E70 000 to E80 000 was spent yesterday to motivate the players and everyone else in the club’s set-up,” said our source who said even the players were so excited because they had not thought everyone would get something.

Efforts to get the club’s captain failed but two of the players who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed the windfall. “It is one way the boss tries to motivate us and encourage us to keep working hard for the team but I can’t go into figures,” said the player.

The other also admitted they received cash for their CAF preliminary round success and now they were looking forward to even doing better against Tanzania’s tough opponents Azam FC. Swallows acting CEO Sibusiso Manana referred all questions to their Chairman, Victor ‘Maradona’ Gamedze.

However, Gamedze expressed surprise that the news travelled so fast, giving a diplomatic response to the effect that ‘Orapa was a tough CAF match’ and that was the only time he would offer incentives to his players to win a match. Ironically, this means Swallows players who have earned E8 000 from the two-legged CAF match as they got E4 000 each even in Botswana, will not be having any incentive to beat First Division League opponents Matsapha United in tomorrow’s SwaziBank Cup last 16 clash at Somhlolo National Stadium, kick off at 3.30pm.
