MBABANE – His Majesty King Mswati III’s documented passion for football has received rave review from Zurich. Visiting FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, who made a historic visit to the country to meet Their Majesties at Mandvulo Hall in Lozitha yesterday, was moved by the King’s passion for the number one sport in the world.

Shortly after learning about the King’s involvement in the ‘beautiful game’, especially through the Ingwenyama Cup that involves regional teams; the most powerful person in global football said His Majesty had the interest of the sport at heart. “When the King speaks, you can feel the passion for soccer. I’m excited to be here.

“I’m happy for everything he does football. It’s a pity I’ll be here for a while but I hope to be back for a soccer match in future,” said Infantino.
The celebrated football administrator lauded Africa’s passion for the game and stressed that it should be channelled towards development.

The King, in his address, had expressed his hope of seeing the country hosting or playing in the biggest stage in world football. “We still need to improve to be among the best. Congratulations on your appointment as FIFA President,” said the King.

The King also stressed on football’s power to unite people, even in times of conflicts like the World War II.
“We appreciate your commitment to African football,” added the King.

Infantino, who replaced Sepp Blatter, after the latter stepped down under pressure last year after 17 years on board, arrived in the continent on Tuesday to attend an African football summit in South Africa. He had invited all 54 African national football association presidents to Johannesburg for two days of meetings, starting on Tuesday.

Organisers of the two-day summit said Infantino would explain changes to the global game, including expanding the World Cup to 48 teams from 2026. Under the 48-team format, there has been media speculation that Africa could get up to nine slots.
