MBABANE – The last negative headline about them was when they suffered their only defeat to bitter rivals Manzini Wanderers in the Swazi Telecom Charity Cup – but that has suddenly changed.

That is record-breaking Mbabane Swallows, whose trusted defender Mandla Palma, usually calm as a cucumber, lost his cool and allegedly assaulted a Highlanders lady fan named Thabisile Matsebula after Sunday’s MTN Premier League Y’ello Sunday triple-header games at Somhlolo National Stadium.

The fan immediately reported the matter to the Lobamba Police Station where a case of assault common was opened.
The player was eventually apprehended yesterday, charged and kept in police custody for a few hours before being released but was warned by Lobamba police to appear in court on the date assigned by the officers.

He was released because he is public figure and not expected to evade court proceedings.
He was not alone as his co-accused, a kombi driver believed to be a Swallows’ fanatic too, was arrested as well.
The driver is said to be the one who sparked the unfortunate incident when he told Palma and other teammates that the fan was boasting about Highlanders being her team and defending it against those who spoke ill of it.

Information established on the matter is that it happened just outside the main gate at the stadium. Initially, it was gathered that the fan allegedly hurled an insult towards the Swallows player, which invited the beating.
However, the matter is yet to be referred to court where Palma will have the opportunity to clear his name as he remains innocent until proven guilty.
