MBABANE – Amid high operational costs and recurring debts worth millions, the University of Swaziland (uniswa) has purchased a brand new fire engine worth over E1 million, a move which is unknown to its line ministry.

The university is under the portfolio of the Ministry of Education and Training.
Despite being a member of the university council, Pat Muir, who is the Principal Secretary in the ministry, vehemently denied any knowledge of such a purchase by the institution.

“I am a member of the university council and I can tell you that I am not aware of what you are talking about. As the line ministry, we are not aware that UNISWA has bought a fire engine.”
This is contrary to assertions by UNISWA Registrar Dr Salebona Simelane, who had said the procurement of the fire engine was discussed by the relevant council members before it was bought.

He said this in response to a questionnaire that the statutory Committee of Council discussed the purchase of the equipment and decided that it was a necessary asset for the university.

The rather mysterious purchase of the expensive asset comes at a time when the university is on the brink of financial ruin with an outstanding debt of E86 million to the Swaziland Revenue Authority in unpaid tax.
The fire truck, which is a brand new Toyota Land Cruiser, is kept within the institution’s mechanical workshop and is yet to be utilised by the institution.
