MBABANE – Stand up for Swaziland’s new professional boxer – Sibonelo ‘Mayweather’ Ndzimandze!

The award-winning pugilist is turning professional following an illustrious amateur career spanning over a decade. The 28-year-old, who was competing in the 69kg division, announced the decision to compete in the paying ranks yesterday, following on the footsteps of almost forgotten 1987 All-Africa Games gold medal winner and 1986 Commonwealth Games silver medallist, Leonard Makhanya, as well as Douglas Simelane, who is now attached to Ingwe Boxing Club.

Swaziland’s ‘Mayweather’ will move to South Africa to begin his new journey as the country is yet to earn professional status. Following countless podium finishes in national and regional championships, the Ubombo Boxing Stable’s fighter declared his readiness to take the bull by its horns.
Ndzimandze was handpicked among 70 trialists at Middelburg in South Africa’s Mpumalanga Province recently. It is the same area where he will be based as he is forced to cut ties with the Swaziland Boxing Association (SWABA). He will be attached to a team styled Lubisi.
As a professional, he will compete without head guards on top of taking to the ring with a bare chest.

“After winning countless trophies in Swaziland and beyond, I find myself sometimes without competition locally.
“I feel it’s time to compete with the elite boxers from across the region,” said Ndzimandze, who got the nickname from an impressed guest in 2007.

The former Zone IV silver medallist conceded that competing as a professional would cost an arm and leg, appealing for support from sponsors and stakeholders.
