MBABANE – While Cristiano Ronaldo crowned off his magnificent 2016 by winning the inaugural FIFA Best Player of the Year, the country’s national team coach and captain did not vote.

This may be solely because Sihlangu currently has no coach after the National Football Association of Swaziland (NFAS) decided not to give Harries ‘Madze’ Bulunga a new contract at the end of September last year. Only 77 of the 452 - who comprised not just captains and national coaches but members of that nation’s media had no room for the Portugal and Real Madrid star in their best three.
Representing the country’s media, Kenneth Dlamini opted for French and Spain’s Atletico Madrid’s Antoino Griezmann as his best for the past year with Brazil’s Neymar and Gareth Bale from Wales as his second and third choices.

Ronaldo failed to vote for any player from rivals Barcelona, and opted for an all-Real Madrid cast, putting Gareth Bale at the top. Argentina-born Lionel Messi followed suit, voting for the Barcelona trio of Luis Suarez, Neymar and Andres Iniesta. Portuguese captain Ronaldo was voted FIFA’s 2016 Player of the Year at a glamorous ceremony in Zurich, Switzerland on Monday night.

The Real Madrid superstar lifted the coveted award following a successful year for both club and country, helping Portugal lift a maiden European Championship crown while guiding ‘Los Blancos’ to UEFA Champions League glory as well as FIFA Club World Cup success.
In all, Ronaldo netted 55 goals and contributed 17 assists in 57 games across the calendar year for both club and country; 42 of those goals were scored in 44 appearances for Madrid while 13 goals were scored in 13 games for Portugal.
