’LANDERS TURN TO MARUWA

MBABANE – As the search for Malawian coach Meck Mwase’s replacement continues at Mbabane Highlanders, axed Green Mamba Zimbabwean coach Herbet Maruwa is favoured to land the hot seat.

This is more so because he has been in the country and now knows the local game at the elite stage as well as the players – at least an insider in the team concurred. It is now history that the club was over the weekend with another Zimbabwean coach called Wilson Mutekede, who once worked with Caps United and possesses a CAF A Licence on top of being a CAF Instructor.

“Mutekede was with us and watched our game at Somhlolo Stadium on Sunday against Leopard and we met with him afterwards. It transpired the directors, patrons and some highly-placed technical people in the country were not impressed when they sat with him in the interview,” explained the team’s Interim Management Committee’s (MC) Chairman and General Manager David Litchfield when asked about the latest developments.
He confirmed saying “Maruwa is among the coaches we’ll talk to and we’ll meet him tomorrow (today) as it was impossible today (yesterday) on his request to attend to a family issue.”

He explained Highlanders were still actively looking for a coach, denying claims that Mutekede, who had allegedly been already introduced to the players last Friday, left under unclear circumstances. He insisted nothing had been agreed with all the coaches that had been brought to them, especially because they all have the same agent so they would decide on the best.

He did not deny speculation that some patrons and directors felt at this stage of the league when they are fighting relegation, the coach must be someone who knew and understood the local game and that gives Maruwa the edge.
Maruwa lost his Green Mamba job last week and was replaced by former national team Sihlangu’s coach Harries ‘Madze’ Bulunga whose debut game against Mbabane Swallows ended in a 2-3 defeat over the weekend. The team’s Board of Directors Chairman Zweli Jele had last Friday downplayed Mutekede’s presence in the club saying they would know by Sunday after the Royal Leopard game or today who their coach is.
Efforts to reach Maruwa failed as both his cellphone numbers were off.
