MBABANE – With their defensive struggles glaring, Mbabane Highlanders have signed former Zambia’s Zanaco and Chipolopolo sensational defender Cosmas Kabaza – releasing Sierra Leon-born defender Baimba Kamara in the process.

The Zambian defender, who last August had a three-week trial with Portugal First Division team Famalicao, joined the black and white giants two weeks ago, according to sources in the team. It is said he was due to debut against Royal Leopard last Sunday in the MTN Premier League but work permit problems delayed his maiden appearance.

Ironically, Kamara, who has scored three times for Highlanders this season, was not part of the team that lost 2-3 to Leopard and fans asked questions as their defence was hugely exposed on the day.
“Kamara has been officially released after contract talks hit a snag and his clearance is in his hands as we speak,” confirmed a highlyplaced source in the club.

It is said Kamara’s contract expired on December 31 last year but after talks for renewal failed, he was released. Besides, the club found itself with six foreigners after bringing in Cosmas and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) attacking midfielder Reagan Kampumu.
“These two, Cosmas and Reagean, will play if selected by our technical bench this weekend against Tambuti. As for Kamara, I can’t comment about him but I know his contract ran out last month,” the club’s General Manager David Litchfield said when reached.

He also confirmed the foreign quota issue, conceding that they now had six foreign players instead of five but could deliberately exclude Kamara because he had no contract anymore. Asked about frozen defender Sibusiso Dlamini, he said they were currently arranging to meet the player.

“He’s a Highlanders player with a long term contract and it has been decided we bring him to the table so it will happen soon and he is not even in our transfer list,” Litchfield said of the player who was turned back in camp three weeks ago and never returned to training.
Other foreign players in the team are striker Mohammed Sabella, injured winger Thokozani Khanyile and defender Takawira Chimwanda who he said was expected back either this weekend or next as he was in his last stage of physiotherapy.
