MANZINI – Swaziland University Staff Sports Association (SUSSA) athletes are hoisting the Swazi flag high at the ongoing Southern Africa University Staff Sports Association (SAUSSA) games.

The games were held yesterday at Mavuso Sports Centre in which 18 universities battle it out in the athletics sports day. Swaziland received gold medals in the 5 000 metres in which Dan Dlamini was the eventually winner after clocking at 22:11:40 while Trevor Makeko, from the University of Zimbabwe, came second at 22:17:00 with Kate Milumbe coming third at 23:24:00.

Speaking after the race, Dlamini said it was a tough race but he was prepared to soldier on until the end of the contest.
“I am very happy that I was the eventually winner after my Zimbabwean counterpart gave me a hard time. I started at a slow pace but in the last three laps, I outpaced the contender and he failed to keep up with me until the finish line,” said Dlamini.

Meanwhile, in the 200 metres female category, Brenda Zwane from the University of Swaziland, Mbabane Campus outpaced her opponents to finish first. She clocked at 28 seconds while UNAM’s Anna Shipanga  came second at 29:84 seconds with University of Lesotho’s Katlego Ngobeni settling for the third spot at 34:73 seconds.

Zwane said she was surprised that she came first because she did not prepare for the race. “I just took a chance and it really worked out as I won the race. It was fun and I enjoyed myself,” said Zwane with excitement written over her face.

Other races that saw the host country excelling were in the 100 metres females, 800 metres females and 200 males.
