MBABANE – The quest to produce top level tennis junior players has heightened as over 20 future stars took part in an intense training programme during the first day of the SNTA camp held at OlympAfrica Centre.

Junior Tennis Initiative (JTI) Coordinator Bruce Gama put 12 of the players through performance training and he was assisted by Mandla Zwane, who is based in Lobamba and Bongani Kunene based in Mbabane.
The camp started yesterday and it will end tomorrow for the Lobamba training centre, before it moves to the University of Swaziland (UNISWA) Kwaluseni Campus courts.

Last week, a three-day training camp was set up at the Mbabane Club as the Swaziland National Tennis Association (SNTA) capitalises on the schools holidays to intensify its programme.

Yesterday, the gruelling session lasted for three hours under the scorching sun and strong winds.
The main objective is to enhance the players’ mental strength during tournaments backed by solid parameters, fitness and strategic thinking.
The coaches are introducing the fundamentals of the sport through drills and play based on training. They are also focusing on consistency in rallying the ball over the net.

Gama said the players have shown tremendous dedication as some from Mbabane have moved with the camp to Lobamba despite taking part last week.
“We are happy with the numbers but our focus is not on mass participating but on improving the standard of those who are already playing competitively.
