MBABANE – Sihlangu could become one of only two COSAFA countries in next year’s AFCON finals in Gabon.

Zimbabwe is so far the only country in the Southern horn of Africa to have booked a place in the continental football showpiece in early January 2017. National Football Association of Swaziland NFAS CEO Frederick Mngomezulu said the match against Malawi will be the biggest in the history of the country’s senior national team. He said the FA executive committee will meet this week to discuss the proposed preparation plan submitted by the technical bench headed by Harries ‘Madze’ Bulunga.
“The plan is here, and we need to see how we can implement it. We are on the verge of greatness,” he said.

Sources close to the FA executive have confided that the technical bench has proposed an international friendly against Mozambique on the weekend of August 29.
Mngomezulu said: “We cannot reveal anything now until we have discussed the proposal.”

“We can only confirm that the match against Malawi will be on Sunday, September 4 at the Kamuzu Banda Stadium in Blantyre at 4:30pm. The reason for the late kick-off could be that most of the games will be played at the same time,” he said. The COSAFA region has seen a number of its giant teams crashing out of the AFCON qualifiers. The teams include Zambia who were the winners of the tournament in 2012, South Africa and Angola. The Harries ‘Madze’ Bulunga- coached side needs to beat Malawi and hope to be among the two best finishers in the qualifiers to progress to Gabon.

This week’s Sihlangu meeting will also discuss, among others issues, the E2 million needed to assist the team qualify. Task team Chairman Victor ‘Maradona’ Gamedze told the prime minister that Sihlangu could make history and qualify if they could get the amount to prepare for the match against the Flames of Malawi.
