LAVUMISA – Top female cyclist Carol du Pont remains on top of the road race charts in the ladies category despite missing Saturday’s Kukhanya Shiselweni Road Cycle Classic.

No female cyclist took part in the second edition of the 94km event at Lavumisa. Du Pont led the charts after the two events in Nhlangano and Mafutseni and was expected to add to her 350-point tally.  Wendy Reed, who also features in the main races, did not feature in the race.

Leading the charts in the men’s category before the stop at Lavumisa was MTN Khemani’s Similo Nyoni, who ranked third in 02:51:21:78 hours. The updated standings are expected to be released by Cycling Association of Swaziland’s Menzi Tsela, in the next few days. “It was a tough race. I was with the chasing peloton for the better part of the race,” said Nyoni
“I hope I’ve done enough to stay on top of the charts,” said the 20-year-old.

Tsela, who plays the role of commissaire in races, was impressed with the turnout as he highlighted that the numbers had increased as compared to the past year. A commissaire is equivalent to a referee or umpire. Over 100 cyclists took part in the races. “For the first time we had cyclists from South Africa while those from Mozambique and Botswana returned,” said Tsela. “We had a perfect race. The sport is growing even administratively.”

Meanwhile Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs Minister, David ‘Cruiser’ Ngcamphalala, also made a stop in Lavumisa just hours after his return from Botswana. He again gave the event a thumbs-up, saying it was highlighted during the meeting in that country that sports and culture should be used to create job opportunities for citizens.
