MBABANE – Run you can, but hiding no – that is exactly what Moneni Pirates have experienced as they received E0.00 during the MTN League prize presentation recently – PLS deducted E50 000 to repay the E107 000 debt from 2011.

Interestingly, the debt was accrued before the current regime led by out of contract December Mavimbela. In the midst of the highest fine ever in the land of E156 00 before E49 000 was suspended to bring it to E107 000, was then PLS Chairman Sipho Matse, who was also a Pirates official back then.

The club was charged along with him and several players, who included Menzi ‘Magawugawu’ Simelane, who is still with the club. Their sin was attacking a referee during a match at Somhlolo National Stadium in which guns were also drawn.

“We got so unfortunate that when we took over the club we found it owing the PLS a fine amounting to E107 000 and we have been losing 10 per cent of gate collections for some time now repaying the money. Since our era, we’ve not had cases of violence but this one is very old and a violent one that occurred in 2011.

“What happened now is that we received nothing yet we had expected E50 000 as our runners-up prize and when the deduction was effected, we went to the PLS to try and negotiate that they return the money as we needed to settle certain costs like paying players and other bills as a club,” Pirates Chief Executive Officers (CEO), Thami Dlamini confirmed.

He explained that after approaching the PLS, they successfully received E25 000 back, giving credit to the organisation’s Chairman Victor ‘Maradona’ Gamedze and the CEO John Mazibuko for their understanding.

“It was not an issue for us but the PLS understands its teams do not make much so we needed this money. We’re so grateful to the PLS for their understanding in the whole issue as we’re not running from the debt,” he explained.
