DON’T FIX IT IF AIN’T BROKEN!

My dearest readers... Journalism without a moral position is impossible. Every journalist is a moralist. It’s absolutely unavoidable,” once wrote French writer, Marguerite Duras.

Some may argue that ‘morality’ and ‘media’ cannot be used in the same sentence. I will obviously argue otherwise. For, it is no less journalistic duty to support an initiative aimed at advancing a national cause. I have a confession to make.

I was part of several meetings which orchestrated the current Premier League of Swaziland (PLS) Board of Directors structure and have supported the new dimension taken by football some ten years ago every step of the way. From the days of Moses Motsa as chairman, current chairman, Victor ‘Maradona’ Gamedze being the power behind the throne, I made my two cents worth contribution consulting and deliberating with former members of the PLS Executive Celani Shongwe and Martin ‘Internash’ Dlamini, both of whom can sell an egg to hen and an ice to an Eskimo.

That’s the main reason my interest in what happens at the PLS is unavoidable because, frankly, I have seen this baby from a pregnancy stage and how it was conceived. Like a pregnant woman, I have encountered the pain, the struggle, sweating, back-stabbing until the bundle of joy – the baby – was born. I have seen the baby take its steps slowly and slowly. At times literally struggling and hyper-active armchair critics were quickly predicting its demise and some power hungry, wet-behind-the-ears administrator doing their damndest to be relevant by criticising every move made by those running football. Some of the issues raised were genuine and indeed it needed to be tweaked here and there. It wasn’t perfect much as it wasn’t, at first, even in South Africa where we modelled ours.

But ten years later, we can all agree the administration might have some negatives but the positives far outweigh the negatives by a mile. We can all agree the confidence sponsors have on the PLS administration has improved ten-folds hence the continued ‘marriage’ with all our sponsors and new ones coming on board. Like every ‘marriage’ there would be some glitches and not seeing things in the same light but it is no train-smash. Any hassles have been overcome and the journey continues.
