MBABANE – Former Sihlangu coach Ted Dumitru has died after collapsing from a heart attack at the Eastgate Shopping Centre yesterday.

The four-time league winner with both Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns became the first expatriate to lead Sihlangu when he joined from Romania in 1983. Information sourced from South Africa’s online publications Kick Off and Soccer Laduma disclosed that the coaching expert collapsed in the morning and was rushed to a hospital where he finally died.

He would have turned 77 years in September 2 this year as he was born in 1939.
The news of his death was first confirmed by South African Football Association (SAFA) Technical Director Neil Tovey in an interview with Soccer Laduma.

“He was a good football person, dedicated to the game and outspoken with strong views and opinions. He brought about change to our game and stood up for what he believed in. He will be missed,” Tovey said.
FA CEO Frederick Mngomezulu paid glowing tribute to the man who he said had contributed greatly to Swazi football.

“We have just been informed of his passing away and we are still shocked as an association given the long standing relationship we had with Dumitru. He is a former Sihlangu coach and his contribution to local football and beyond cannot be doubted. He has our guest in the Build It tournament motivating coaches and players alike about the game. He has written many books on football coaching. We pass our condolences to his family both here and in Romani where he originates from. We pray that God will comfort them in this hour of need,” he said.
