EZULWINI – It will cost the country and an arm and a leg to send Team Swaziland to the Region V Under -20 Youth Games later this year.

Angola hosts the next instalment of the regional showpiece that was formerly known as Zone VI Games in December.  Swaziland National Sports and Recreation Council (SNSRC) Chairman, Lawrence ‘Lolo’ Mthethwa, addressing guests, mainly Prime Minister, Sibusiso Dlamini, during the launch of the Shukuma Football Tournament  yesterday, said his office needed not less than E2.1 million  for the trip. The launch was held at the Swaziland Water Services Corporation (SWSC) head offices in Ezulwini yesterday.

“Our operations can be grounded if we can rely from the little we have in our coffers, so we need a special subvention for the games,” said Mthethwa. Worth mentioning is that the needed amount is about a third of national sports budget which stands at over E6.4 million.

Mthethwa said the country faced a heavy fine of up to E626 872 (about US$40 000) if it would not be represented in the championships.
In his address, Mthethwa, also stressed on the need to hasten the finalisation of the Sport Act which is a currently a bill in the quest to professionalise sports in the country.

Meanwhile, Mthethwa celebrated the several strides taken in improving sport in the country, especially the Shukuma initiative, which is his office’s flagship programme.
“There were challenges during the transformation from the old set-up to the current structure, as there were debts that needed to be settled by the new board,” said Mthethwa.
