MBABANE – Four local referees have lost out on about E16 000 (US$1 000) each on allowances after the withdrawal of Botswana’s Mochudi Centre Chiefs from the Confederations of African Football (CAF) Champions League.

Mbongiseni Fakudze, Simanga Nhleko, Petros Mbingo and Sandile Nxumalo were scheduled to officiate in this weekend’s CAF inter-club tournament clash between the Botswana Premier League giants and Ferroviario of Mozambique. Chiefs have also landed themselves in possible fines and a two-year ban by the continental mother body for their sudden withdrawal from the tournament.

The side pulled out due to monetary constraints, CAF confirmed through their official website on Monday.
According to CAF regulations, apart from financial penalties, any club that withdraws from its competitions after the announcement of the fixture gets banned from CAF inter-club tournaments for two editions.
Match officials pocket US$1 000 per match in CAF assignments.

Meanwhile, local giants Mbabane Swallows are set for their fourth consecutive appearance in the CAF Champions League and their sixth in the past decade as they prepare to welcome APR of Rwanda in a Valentine’s Day fixture this Sunday at the Somhlolo National Stadium.

However, the red and white giants are yet to go beyond the preliminary stages, losing to South African sides Orlando Pirates (2006), Supersport United (2009) and Zambian sides Zanaco (2013), Nkana (2014), and Zesco United (2015).
