‘SWAZI BOLT’ FOR INDOOR WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
MANZINI – Sprinter Sibusiso ‘Swazi Bolt’ Matsenjwa will represent the country for the fourth time at the IAAF World Championships in Portland, United States.
IAAF is an acronym for the International Association of Athletics Federations and was inaugurated as the World Indoor Games in 1985 in Paris, France. They were subsequently renamed in 1987 as they are known today.
More than 600 athletes from as many as 200 different countries will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in each of the 13 men’s and women’s events at the IAAF World Indoor Championships Portland 2016. The four-day meet will be held on March 17-20 at the Oregon Convention Centre.
‘Swazi Bolt’ will once again compete in the 60m event at the championships. His previous appearances were in Qatar (2010), Turkey (2012) and Poland (2014).
Athletics Association of Swaziland (AAS) Secretary Thoba Mazibuko could only confirm that ‘Swazi Bolt’ was the top contender for the country’s slot at the World Championships ahead of the association’s Technical Committee last night.
“Based on the results from the Track and Field event here which served as a qualifying mark, he will represent the country again. But the Technical Committee will meet on Monday (last night) to finalise the name of the country’s representative,” Mazibuko said.
Reached yesterday, ‘Swazi Bolt’ said he knew he was the one going after winning the 60m qualifying event on 06:50 seconds. It was the first time AAS presented a 60m qualifying event ahead of the World Championships.
