MBABANE – Police ensemble Royal Leopard have pulled out of next year’s Champions League.

Leopard qualified to represent the country in the continental competition after winning last season’s MTN Premier League. Financial constraints have forced the star-studded outfit to withdraw from the tournament. Mbabane Swallows, on the other hand, are eager to take Leopard’s place and venture into Africa for the fifth time in five seasons. The ‘Birds’ qualify by virtue of being last season’s runners up. Dlamini confirmed yesterday that they would not be playing in the Champions League this time. He disclosed that the team has already notified the Premier League of Swaziland (PLS) of its decision.

“We cannot run away from the fact that when a team wants to participate in such a tournament, then that particular team must have enough resources. We all know that we have been participating in this tournament for the past two years. This would have been the third time in a row for us.”

“Unfortunately as a team we are still trying to settle the debts of the previous years. We obviously accumulated huge debts in the process and it would not have been feasible for us to partake this time,” he said.

Asked on whether the decision by the team will not have adverse effects in terms of team spirit among the players, Dlamini said it will not.
“Such a decision can only affect those people who are not close enough to the team to know what is really happening.

I did say that for the past two seasons we have been competing in Africa and that means we have accumulated debts, which we are in the process of settling. We cannot, therefore, partake this year for obvious reasons,” he said. An insider at Swallows said the team was willing to venture into Africa in the event Leopard withdraw.
