PIGG’S PEAK – The PLS Board of Governors have mandated the executive committee to take punitive measures against Mbabane Highlanders.

The decision, which was communicated to the media by three representative of the organisation’s Board of Governors at Pigg’s Peak Hotel yesterday, emanated from a reported series of incidents where the club is accused of disrespecting the Premier League of Swaziland (PLS) office.

The elite football mother body had taken club bosses, who are the members of the 24 Board of Governors, to a two-day retreat at the hotel over the weekend.
During the retreat, a report delivered by the PLS office presented a series of incidents that involved the capital city giants, which they felt amounted to dragging the name of the sport through the mud.

The incidents included the one that occurred at the Mavuso Sports Centre where the club failed to bring an away kit and ended up using one that had not been branded with the league’s sponsor’s logo as per the rules and regulations. The governors unanimously resolved that the team should be punished severely for also taking to the media to attack the PLS on a number of issues.

There were 18 teams who took part in the meeting, and the three who addressed the media were Royal Leopard’s Mxolisi Dlamini, Mandla Mamba of Manchester United and Victor Rodrigues of Malanti Chiefs.

“As clubs, we have noted with concern the behaviour of one particular member, which is Mbabane Highlanders, that is setting a bad practice in football. The team started by failure to bring playing cards to a match, and went on to fail to bring an away kit. There have been media reports attributed to the team that by nature seems to drag the image of the league. We have since mandated the executive committee to invoke the rules and regulations as well as the constitution to deal with this individual team,” Dlamini said.

He said they had given the PLS some time to deal with the matter, and give feedback to the governors later on what action they had taken.

“The punishment has to be harsh to serve as a deterrent to other would-be offenders. The league has taken a significant step towards professionalism and we cannot allow such elements from among ourselves to derail those actions.

The aim is to attract sponsors and we cannot achieve that if we have teams that behave in this manner. It is pity that the rules are there and sadly the executive has been lenient. We implore them to take action,” said Rodrigues.
