MANZINI – Mbabane Highlanders boss Bheki ‘Rubber’ Simelane has disowned the ladies team registered in their name.

The ladies team was registered with the Women Football Association and played cross town rivals Mbabane Swallows in their opening league match on Sunday at Trade Fair Ground. Swallows won the match 7-0.

Highlanders have since written to the Football Association (FA) seeking their intervention in the use of the team’s name.
According to Simelane, there is no women’s team in their structures and could take the legal route as using the brand of the team could come with many implications.

He said as per the contractual agreement endorsed by the team elders, he was the one calling the shots at the Mbabane giants, at least for the next five years. Simelane is in his second year of the five-year contract after successfully retaining the team’s elite league status.

“We do not know of a Highlanders women team and we do not have such in our structures. As per the contractual agreement endorsed by the team’s elders, Highlanders is controlled by one person and people must understand that we have a brand to protect. This is liable to legal action,” he said.

Sikelela Mhlanga, the brain behind the Highlanders ladies team, said he would soon be meeting Simelane to reach common ground as he felt having a women’s team was a good initiative. Mhlanga is a staunch Highlanders fan.
