MBABANE – The local fishing fraternity has been dealt a huge blow following the passing on of seasoned angler, Jared van Dyk.

Van Dyk boasted of 16 national team caps after representing the country in major tournaments that include the World Championships and Zone VI (now Region V). He passed on last Tuesday after he reportedly got sick after the trip to compete in the Region V   Championships in Mozambique recently. Swaziland Angling Association (SAA) President Derek Hopf also confirmed the latest developments, saying the 35-year-old would be missed following his flawless showing in tournaments.

“He was an excellent angler and represented Swaziland 16 times.
We shall certainly miss the young man. The World Championships in Italy in October will be dedicated to the memory of Jared.”

National team skipper, Louis van Zuydam, also said he was still coming to terms with the loss.
“We’ve lost a very talented angler,” he said briefly.

Van Dyk also had countless podium finishes in major local tournaments that include the celebrated Maguga Bass Challenge, where he claimed two gold medals. He was part of the side that claimed a silver medal in the global showpiece in Venezuela in 2012.

A memorial service will be held tomorrow at Esibayeni Lodge’s Mogambo Hall, starting at 10am.
