MBABANE – Malawi coach Ernest Mtawali has named has named six Premier Soccer League-based players in his final 21-men squad to face Sihlangu next Sunday.

The players are industrious Platinum Stars midfielder Robert Ngambi and club mate Robin Ngalande, Limbikani Mzava of Mpumalanga Black Aces, Bidvest Wits’ Gerald Phiri Jr, and the Jomo Cosmos duo of Micium Mhone and Muhammed Sulumba.

Black Aces’ Mzava has been named the captain with former South Africa’s Orlando Pirates striker Chiukepo Msowoya his vice.
Mtawali announced the squad yesterday afternoon at the Football Association of Malawi (FAW) premises in the presence of FAW’s General Secretary Suzyo Nyirenda. Dropped players include Joseph Kamwendo has been Malawi’s captain for past 10 years, Harry Nyirenda and Esau Kanyenda amongst others.

Mtawali said he selected players based on form rather than names.
“I have done my research and consulted on the selection of the players. Kamwendo has been the leader for the past 10 years but he lacked game time just as Harry (Nyirenda). The door will never be closed for any player. If Esau is going to bang in the goals at Polokwane City, I will call him back,” he said.

Malawi will arrive in South Africa tomorrow for a five-day camp before crossing over to the country for next Sunday’s eagerly awaited 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
