MBABANE – The top three winners in the International Games Fund (IGF) promotion have collectively spent over E17 000 in participating in the competition.

Recently retired Mhlatane High School Deputy Principal, Mfanuzodlani Nhleko, emerged as the grand prize winner after winning a trip worth E100 000 to watch next week’s All-Africa Games in Congo, Brazzaville. He was announced the ‘champion’ at a press briefing at Swaziland National Sports and Recreational Council (SNSRC) offices in Mbabane yesterday.

The 60-year-old said he sent over 600 messages, spending over E3 400. In second place was self-employed Pinky Magagula, who spent about E1 500. The 40-year-old won a scholarship worth E30 000. In third place was Lungile Matsenjwa, who walked away with E15 000 holiday voucher for two at Esibayeni Lodge in Matsapha.  She said she also sent countless messages.

“I’ve been in discussion with my wife over providing at least something for our athletes as they represent the country. The trip has also come in handy as I’ve just retired,” Nhleko, who was accompanied by his wife, Thabisile, said.
The competition, which was run by the SNSRC, started in May this year. It was used to generate money that went into the IGF. Each text costs E5, excluding a 70 cents Value Added Tax (VAT) charge. Participants needed to send the letters IGF to 5060 to be eligible to take part.

SNSRC had partnered with MTN Swaziland and Integrat Services in the initiative. The latter entered into a Short Message Service (SMS) joint venture with the giant mobile company last year.
SNSRC Chief Executive Officer Darius Dlomo, interviewed afterwards, said total money generated in the project could only be disclosed after a Board meeting.
“We’re grateful to our partners MTN Swaziland and Integrat as well as the nation at large for the support.

“A lion’s share of our subvention from government is diverted towards international games but it is never enough. We thank people for embracing the initiative.”
The rest of the winners were Mfanasibili Sibandze and Mduduzi Dlamini, who got a Samsung Tablet worth E9 000 and a Samsung Galaxy smart phone costing E6 000, respectively.

The 11th All Africa Games, which start next week are scheduled for September 4 to 19 in Brazzaville, Congo. The country will be represented in athletics, boxing, tennis, judo and cycling.
