MBABANE – Elite league teams were always going to struggle to meet the one million voting target set for this year’s Swazi Telecom Charity Cup.

Congratulations are nevertheless in order to the four teams, namely, Young Buffaloes, Mbabane Swallows, Royal Leopard and Manzini Wanderers for making the cut for this year’s tournament that is billed for Sunday at Somhlolo National Stadium.

It was especially good to see both Wanderers and Swallows once again make the grade. They are the only two teams in the country that have never missed out on participating in what has become the local season’s official opener.

In all past 13 editions of the tournament, Wanderers and Swallows have always taken part. After qualifying on Sunday midnight, this year’s edition will mark a record 14th appearance for either side in the one-day tournament established in 2002.

Wanderers won the first two editions of the tournament before Swallows wrestled the trophy away from them in 2004.
Credit goes especially to the Manzini outfit currently riddled by their never ending internal squabbles for putting these aside and voting for the noble cause. Few would have expected Wanderers to make the cut, as the problems engulfing the team are threatening its very survival.

However, they have proved to be big-hearted indeed by pulling all stops to ensure they do not miss out on participation once again. Clearly Wanderers did not want to rewrite the history pages for all the wrong reasons.

Police ensemble Royal Leopard has over the years grown in stature. ‘Ingwe Emabalabala’, as they are fondly known, have, of late made it a habit not to miss out on the season’s opener. Actually, Leopard featured in the first edition of the tournament at Somhlolo National Stadium 14 years ago.
